How to Get Federal Financial Aid for School

By Rachelle Williams of eHow

If you're totally bewildered by the whole financial aid application process...read on and I'll try to make the process a little easier for you in five simple steps.

Go back to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid and begin filling out the form. This form is more commonly referred to as a "FAFSA", so from here on out we'll refer to it as such. Click here to get to the FAFSA WEBSITE

Go through the application and answer each question carefully. Don't be afraid to fill out this form because no one knows the answers to the questions they ask better than you and/or your parents. Towards the end of the application you'll be allowed to do a search for the schools that you want attend. Entering the school code will ensure that they get the financial aid information digitally (MUCH faster than dealing with paper).

Go back over your application, sign and then submit it. That's it. That's all. No Sweat! The most important thing for you to look at is something called an EFC. EFC stands for Expected Family Contribution and it is literally just that...it is a figure of about how much money you and your family will be expected to contribute towards your education based on your answers on the FAFSA. Your EFC is revealed to you in the last stages of your application. Remember, the less money you have--the more money the federal government will give to you to go to college. Of Course, everything is dependent upon your eligibility but here are the current yearly limits of federal money available to you for school: Pell Grant: $4731 Stafford Loans: $5500 (dependent) $9500 (Independent) The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG): $100-$4000 (ranges) Perkins Loan: up to $4000 The Stafford Loans will increases as you progress through college. There is also Federal Work Study, PLUS loans for your parents and plenty of private scholarships, grants and loan programs that you can search for on the internet.

If you mess up do not worry because you can contact them @ 1-800-4-FED-AID. They are always willing and able to help. Good Luck!
